UF-movers-2

After you have found a new place and have decided to move, there are a lot of things to prepare and get done. Moving can be a very stressful time –but, with proper planning and follow through, you can help to ensure a smooth move. Here are some of the most important things you need to do when preparing to move:

  1. Make a list –

First off, you need to make lists. Make a list of everything that needs to be accomplished during the moving process. This would include things like disconnecting Internet service at one house and setting it up at another. You can also have a list of the packing supplies you need to pick up later, the things you want to get rid of, etc. Lists are very helpful for planning, as they help you remember what you might otherwise forget.

  1. Hire moving company –

Certain times of the year are busier than others for movers. If you know you want to use a moving company, it is important that you book them sooner rather than later – especially if you have a specific date in mind.

  1. Downsize –

If you have stuff in your home that you no longer use or is in bad condition taking up space – either sell, donate or trash it. There is no reason to take these items with you, as it will only cost to move them.

  1. Pick up moving supplies –

Everyone needs moving supplies when they move. You can find boxes for free, there are stores that sell used ones at a discounted rate, you can pay full price, or you can get them from your moving company. You also need markers or labels for the boxes and packing tape. You can also get bubble wrap or paper to help protect your breakables. If you run out or don’t want to go through the additional expense, you can always use towels, socks, or other clothing items.

  1. Ask for help –

If you find yourself on a tight deadline, don’t hesitate to ask friends or family to help you pack up. A lot can be done with the promise of pizza and beer.

  1. Allow plenty of time –

Try not to move at the last minute. For a less stressful moving experience it is best to start preparing about 6-8 weeks from the date of move.

  1. Change address –

Don’t forget to notify everyone of your new address. This would include credit card companies, family members, health insurance companies, etc. You can also change your address with the post office, so they can forward your mail for a short amount of time in case you forgot to notify someone.

  1. Pack up possessions –

Pack everything up and get ready for the big day. Try and stay organized by labeling boxes clearly and trying to keep like things together.

  1. Clean your current place –

Be sure to clean your current place before you leave. If you don’t you may get a fee from your landlord.

  1. Set aside things for your first night –

Keep a separate bag with you that include all of your necessities for the first night. This may include toiletries, toilet paper, pet food, etc.

Keeping to a list can greatly reduce the stress of the moving process. Hopefully these tips will help you have a better move.
